Chronicle Of A Summer Essay Contest

The radicality of the 1960 documentary “Chronicle of a Summer” is evident from the first scene, which shows its directors, Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin, discussing the project with their chief associate, Marceline Loridan. The film belongs to a distinctive genre of sociological and psychological journalism—it’s a series of interviews with French people on the street, in the workplace, in the home, and even in vacation spots, to determine the country’s state of mind in the summer of 1960, in the midst of the Algerian war. But even as the filmmakers probe, within the hazardous limits of censorship that prevailed in France at the time, the connection between public policy and private life, they also turn the camera on their own practices and assumptions, and on the cinema itself, which had risen in France to become the art form of the moment. Rouch, a documentary filmmaker whose work of the late fifties veered toward reflexive fictions, was an inspiration for the New Wave. With “Chronicle of a Summer,” he and Morin, a sociologist, made a revolution of their own.
